Trade Justice Workshop at the PNW People Over Profit APEC Counter-Summit

People Over Profits in Indo-Pacific Trade!

1:00pm * Saturday, July 29
University of Washington * Seattle, WA

Many of the countries involved in the Asia Pacific Economic Forum (APEC) meetings in Seattle this summer are also part of the ongoing Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) trade negotiations.  IPEF already includes fourteen countries, and between them, it would set rules governing approximately 40% of the world’s economy. More countries are expected to join IPEF, too, and it is likely to become the template for additional U.S. trade deals across the Americas, Africa, and beyond.

If big corporations get their way, IPEF will set rules that facilitate more offshoring of good-paying jobs, increased exploitation of workers abroad, rip-and-ship resource extraction that accelerates global warming and deregulation for Big Tech in areas like consumer privacy, AI accountability, and anti-monopoly.

Join the Washington Fair Trade Coalition and local labor, environmental, digital rights, and other organizers to learn more about the status of the IPEF negotiations; the struggle between corporate-driven trade rules and people’s interests, and what you can do to make a difference!

Part of a larger People’s Summit with additional workshops on the rights of workers, women, migrants, and the planet.  Suggested donation of $15 – $50; no one turned away for lack of funds.

Town Hall on “Digital Trade”

Worker Rights, AI Discrimination, Consumer Privacy & Anti-Monopoly
4:00pm * Monday, August 7
University of Washington * Seattle, WA
Join U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal and local and national experts for a conversation on current “digital trade” proposals and their implications for worker rights, AI discrimination, consumer privacy and anti-monopoly in the Pacific Northwest and around the globe.

At a moment when policymakers are expressing increased interest in the oversized role that Big Tech has over our economy and society, the sector is quietly pushing for binding digital rules in pending trade agreements that would limit future consumer privacy, data security, algorithmic accountability and anti-trust laws and regulations.  Senior governmental officials from throughout the Pacific Rim will be gathering in Seattle this summer for a “Digital Month” as part of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings.  This town hall provides a public platform to labor, civil rights, consumer and other constituencies that have views on “digital trade” that differ greatly from those of Big Tech lobbyists.

In addition to Rep. Jayapal, participants include Lori Wallach of Rethink Trade, Cherika Carter of the Washington State Labor Council, Jen Lee of ACLU Washington and Julie Bouanna of the Washington Fair Trade Coalition.

Help Stop Trade Attacks on Climate Action

12:00pm * Tuesday, August 8
Seattle Convention Center Summit Building * 900 Pike St, Seattle, WA

Please join the Washington Fair Trade Coalition and our environmental partners as we deliver a letter from roughly 200 state-and-local climate groups to government officials at the Seattle APEC meetings calling for a “Climate Peace Clause” that would end trade attacks threatening climate initiatives in Washington and throughout the world.

Outdated, corporate-driven trade agreements are increasingly being used to challenge clean energy and climate mitigation policies at home and abroad.  Past examples include WTO attacks on state solar programs here in Washington.  With climate catastrophe already on our doorstep, we can’t allow rigged trade rules to delay, weaken or prevent future climate action!

A Climate Peace Clause is an immediate moratorium on the use of international trade agreements to challenge clean energy and climate programs.  Help us bring our Climate Peace Clause demand directly to world officials in Seattle!
