Palm Springs: Rally to Put Working People & the Planet First in Asia-Pacific Trade
As senior officials representing countries across the Pacific Rim gather in Palm Springs for an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum this month, please join labor, human rights, environmental and community organizations for a press event and rally calling for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and any other Asia-Pacific trade deals to prioritize the interests of working people and the planet over corporate profits.
Background: The United States is hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forums for the first time in a dozen years in 2023, and a main item on the agenda is the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) — a massive new trade deal that would set rules governing approximately 40% of the global economy.Lobbyists for Big Tech and other corporate interests are working behind closed doors to insert rules into IPEF that increase their power and profits. To get a trade deal that benefits working people and the planet, we need to ensure negotiators are hearing our voices, too.
Upcoming APEC meetings in Palm Springs in February, Detroit in May, Seattle in August and and San Francisco in November are important opportunities to make our movements heard.
