The Trade Justice Education Fund (TJEF) is a new nonprofit that sponsors public education programs designed to expand awareness about the worker rights, environment and climate, and public health implications of U.S. trade policy.
TJEF’s mission includes increasing public understanding of just, sustainable trade policy alternatives, as opposed to the business-as-usual neoliberalism versus racist nationalism frame that is often presented as the scope of the trade policy debate.
With deep roots in the labor, environmental, family farm, faith and consumer movements, TJEF’s officers and directors together have decades of leadership experience in trade issue education. Current TJEF programs include campaigns on global COVID-19 vaccine equity, climate justice, worker rights and more.
TJEF is seeking a Director of Operations and Administration responsible for setting up and maintaining the bookkeeping, vendor contracts, human resources, accounts payable & receivable, government filings and related administrative and operational duties needed to keep a small nonprofit thriving.
The purpose of this position is to help establish systems for, maintain and fulfill the operational and administrative needs of an approximately 10-person organization. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Conducting all bookkeeping and updating the organization’s bookkeeping methodology and systems on an as needed basis as it grows;
- Tracking grant expenditures and compiling regular reports on cash flow;
- Selecting payroll vendors and maintaining payroll systems, including staying on top of unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation, healthcare and benefits;
- Compiling the organization’s annual 990 and all other regular government filings, and tracking the organization’s compliance needs;
- Paying bills and sending out invoices;
- Advising on and negotiating contracts with vendors; identifying opportunities for improvements; and suggesting new arrangements when warranted;
- Assisting with any internal or external audits;
- Compiling individual reports from staff and contractors into complete organization-wide reports for the executive director, board and funders; and
- Helping fulfill other administrative and operational needs as they arise.

- Have a deep commitment to social and economic justice;
- Have at least five years of bookkeeping and other administrative experience, and a proven track-record of working well independently;
- Be excited about establishing new administrative and operational systems, and feel comfortable being responsible for identifying what is and isn’t working in them and making adjustments as needed;
- Be extremely detail-oriented; skilled at task tracking, calendaring and planning ahead; and able to handle multiple responsibilities at one time;
- Have experience with a range of administrative software (including QuickBooks, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Slack) and be comfortable learning how to use new technologies;
- Writing experience (such as with grant reports; fundraising solicitations; website content; etc.) is a strong plus;
- Be comfortable working with labor unions, environmental groups, faith organizations and people of diverse races, sexualities, gender identities, faiths and political backgrounds.
Hours, Location & Compensation
This is a full-time, remote position paying $65,000 – $72,500, depending upon experience and location. Other benefits provided.
